Exploding Cell Phones

August 14, 2009

Although there is no reported case of an exploding cell phone, I think everyone should have this “insurance” protecting their phones from thief’s.  If your cell phone is lost or stolen, you should have the choice to have your phone become inoperable for anyone else who may steal this phone in the future.  There are enough phones made all the time.

The reason I say this is that my iPhone was stolen a few weeks ago.  I’ve always had this idea of better cell phone security, but have not had any opportunity to bring this idea to those major cell phone manufactures, so this is just being put out there on the Internet as a blog post for whomever may be able to put any or all of these ideas into action.  A small chip could be active in the phone at all times, and if the phone receives the information from a cell tower or wi-fi port, the phone could shut it’s self off, and destroy all of the data on the phone.  A self destruct sequence, safe for the original owner, and safe for the person stealing the phone, or the one picking up the phone and putting the phone in his or her pocket.

Another idea I had was to give the phone the ability to make a loud beeping sound, louder than a pager, to do this if the phone was lost.  And continue to do this for 10 minutes or so, whenever you can’t find your phone at work, in the car, or at home, give you enough time to hear your phone.  This would also have to work if your phone was off.  Battery life on phones these days are pretty good, and this should be able to be accomplished.

Sure the title of this article is exploding cell phones, and I do realize that taken literally, that could have honest people getting pretty hurt, so I’m scratching the idea that it actually explodes, but I hope this article grabs your attention.  Can we at all make this possible?
